What we record

Who runs this site

Bring a Bite is run by Mark Craddock. For anything about your data, write to hello@bringabite.co.uk.

Analytics, only if you say yes

The first time you visit, a box asks whether we may count your visit with Google Analytics. Nothing is loaded from Google and no cookie is set unless you press Accept. If you press No thanks, nothing is sent anywhere, and the site works exactly the same.

If you accept, Google Analytics records which pages you look at, how you arrived (the site or search that sent you), roughly where you are (the town or region, worked out from your internet address, which Google does not keep), the kind of device and browser you use, how long you stay and how far down a page you scroll. It sets two cookies, _ga and _ga_L6VSL3R0SF, which last up to two years and let it tell a returning visitor from a new one.

We use this only to see which towns and pubs people look at. It is not used for advertising: Google signals, data sharing with Google and every advertising feature are switched off, and advertising consent is never requested. Google keeps the records for 14 months and then deletes them.

Google processes the data for us, and may do so outside the UK; Google's terms for Analytics cover that. The legal basis is your consent, under the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations for the cookies and UK GDPR article 6(1)(a) for the rest.

Changing your mind: the Cookies link at the foot of every page brings the choice back. Choosing No thanks stops anything more being recorded, from that moment; the cookies already set can be cleared in your browser's settings.

Your choice itself is remembered in your browser's local storage, as one word, granted or denied. It is not a cookie and it is never sent anywhere.

If you write to us

Email to hello@bringabite.co.uk is passed on by Cloudflare's email routing to Mark Craddock's own inbox. Your message and your address stay there so we can reply, and we use them for nothing else. Ask, and we will delete them.

Everything else

Hosting. The site is served by GitHub Pages. Like any web server, GitHub sees your internet address when your browser asks for a page, and keeps it in its logs for security. GitHub's privacy statement covers that.

Directions. The Directions links open Google Maps, and only when you press one. From then on Google's own privacy policy applies.

Adding or correcting a pub. That form is on GitHub, and what you write there is public. Leave out personal phone numbers and email addresses.

Fonts are served from this site, so reading a page asks nothing of Google.

Your rights

You can ask what we hold about you, ask us to delete it, or object to it, by writing to hello@bringabite.co.uk. In practice that means any emails you have sent us, and analytics records, which carry no name. If you are unhappy with how we have handled something, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
